Design Communication [ARC60303]
Design Communication is a class where we learn the techniques on how to sketch perspective drawings of a place, how to tone sketches, and technical drawings.

Project 1a
The objectives of this project:

  1. To understand the notion of space in architecture.
  2. To develop skills in visualizing of space through observation and perception of a given site.
  3. To develop skills in sketching as a mode of communication.

Through this project, I have learnt to appreciate spaces and record them through sketches. I also understood that even the same building can have different type of ways to express them.

Project 1b
The objectives of this project:

  1. To understand the notion of space & detailing’s in architecture and objects.
  2. To develop skills in communicating the above in various tonal and depth values.
  3. To develop various techniques of hatching through different medium.

Through this project, I was able to learn how to use different types of hatching technique to do the tonal values of a drawing. I've learnt how to do hatching, cross hatching, stippling and scribbling. It was an eye opening experience as I have never learnt these type of techniques before.

Project 2a
Learning outcomes of this project:
  1. Demonstrate drafting skills in modern and traditional methods of architectural drawing.
  2. Record and present clear and legible architectural information manually.
  3. Identify and apply architectural conventions and symbols.
  4. Demonstrate in pencil and ink examples of: line types, line weights, line quality,  hand lettering

From this project, I have learnt how to apply line weight on my drawing. I was able to record and present architectural information manually as well as identify and apply architectural conventions and symbols on my drawing.

Project 2b
Learning outcomes of this project:
  1. Ability to express spatial ideas and architectural detail in three-dimension, in the format of an axonometric projection.
  2. Understanding of what axonometric projections are, how to generate them and how to apply them to the design process and presentation.
  3. Ability to produce legible architectural drawings.

After completing this project, I learnt the way to produce an axonometric projection. I also was able to learn how to explode the walls and ceiling of a building.

Project 2c
Learning outcomes of this project:
  1. Ability to express spatial ideas and architectural detail in three-dimension, in the format of one-point and two-point perspectives.
  2. Understanding of what perspectives (and its different types) are, how to generate them and how to apply them to the design process and presentation.
  3. Ability to produce legible architectural drawings with strong creative intent.

Through this project, I learnt how to draw a sectional one point perspective and a two point perspective. It is tricky to master the line weight for this project. It was a great and fun experience.

Project 3
The last project was in conjunction with the final project of Architectural Design Studio 1. We were to design a hideout for ourselves which best represent us. We were then assessed onthe architectural drawings on our presentation boards.

From the techniques learnt from the other Design Communication projects, I was able to show the design of my hideout clearly.
